The Ass Kickin Ranch is centrally located 21 miles East of Pierre, SD along SD Hwy #34. Pierre was founded in 1880 during the Great Dakota Boom. Homesteaders flooded the Dakota Territory to obtain the rich soils of the Dakota plains. Much of the homesteaders broke out their 160 acre homesteads into rich productive cropland. Life was tough on the prairie, which in turn made the people tough and innovative to keep the homesteads going. South Dakota became a state in 1889, and because of Pierre’s central location it became the home of the State Capital. The city grew to 14,000 people and has continued its strong development of Agriculture and Recreation. The Oahe Dam was built in the 1950’s and has provided world class recreational opportunities for walleye fishing as well as upland game and waterfowl hunting. Central South Dakota continues to boast and have the reputation of some of the best walleye fishing in the nation and home of the South Dakota pheasant. Think of hunting geese in the morning, pheasants in the afternoon, and catch a stringer of walleye all before sunset. The Ass Kickin Ranch lies along the banks of Lake Sharpe which is downstream from the Oahe Dam. Grain markets in the Hughes County area have developed extensively the last few years providing excellent markets for ag commodities. Markets are located in Pierre, Ft. Pierre, Onida, Harrold and Highmore. A new ethanol plant is being built in Onida, SD and a pulse plant, and bird seed company are operation in Harrold, SD.
Hughes county averages 18-19 inches of rain per year and 33 inches of snow on average. January can be bitter cold and July- August can have scorching termps in the high 90’s and even 100 degrees. Most of the precip comes March thru October with the largest amounts being in latter part of May and June. July typically gets hot and dry. Falls can have early snowfall or 65- 70 degree days right up till Thanksgiving.

site #1 provides water to pivot # 4, #5, #6, #10, and #11. The well is powered by a 200 hp electric pump.

intake from Lake Sharpe and feeds pivot #3.

Site #3 is a 60 hp electric pump with river intake
from Lake Sharpe and feeds pivot #2.

Site #4 is a 200 hp electric pump with river intake lagoon
from Lake Sharpe and feeds pivots #7, #8, and #9.

Riverview Lodge, newly remodeled in 2005 and currently used as the owner’s private home. Past operations allowed the lodge and the attached home to be used as guest quarters for the commercial hunting operation. There are total of 7 bedrooms, 4 full baths, and 2 half baths. Lodge has been shut down over the last few years but could be once again used as a premier lodge adjacent to Lake Sharpe with spectacular views of the Missouri River. Another house on the farm has been used for guests and hired help. The two story home 1800 sq.ft home has a double stall garage. Be sure to view the improvements on the video. A 75’ x75’ Enercept shop provides an efficient utility budget friendly shop for working on your ag equipment. An office is located inside the shop. The hydraulic door allows for quick in and out with your equipment. A 75’ x 150’ steel machine cold storage building is attached to the shop for machinery storage. There are (2) 32’ overhangs providing for additional storage on machinery.
Grain Handling System
A state of the art grain handling system was put into the operation a few years ago. The bins consist of a 30,000 bushel hopper/dryer bin, and (3) 65,000 bushel bins. Other components of the Sioux Steel grain handling system consist of the Hutchinson grain pump, a delux grain dryer, grain scale, and the grain overhead auger arm dumping grain into grain bins. This system is conveniently located along SD Hwy #34, on the north boundary of the farm. Other on site grain storage consist of (2) 24,000 bushel storage, (2) 6000 bushel storage, and (1) 5000 bushel storage. Total grain storage of over 275,000 bushels allows for easy unloading and loading of all the operation’s grain. This system allows for the ag producer to maximize their marketing plan and capitalize their gains.
Current Operation
Current operation consists of corn and soybeans, with grain sorghum being planted in the corners to maximize the dryland acres. Past rotations have consisted of alfalfa on several of the pivots along with wheat in the corners.
Ass Kickin Ranch is located in the treasure trove of recreational opportunities. This farm is a true sportsmen’s paradise. Situated along the banks of the Missouri River and the Central Flyway allows for tremendous waterfowl hunting in the fall. Thousands of Canadian Geese call this home in the late fall.
